S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior and
S-390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations
S-290 instructs prospective fireline supervisors in wildland fire behavior for effective and safe management operations. It goes beyond S-190 with more detailed treatments of fuels, weather and topography, and provides a better basis for analyzing the variables and understanding how they interact and affect fire behavior for safety purposes. We administer the course through a CD that students use for home study, then administer the final exam prior to on-site instruction for S-390.

S-390 supports training requirements to work as a Strike Team/Task Force Leader and is a requirement for RxB2, Burn Boss Type 2. The course instructs prospective fireline supervisors in wildland fire behavior prediction for effective and safe fire management. It introduces fire behavior calculations by manual methods such as tables or nomograms. It gives participants an in-depth understanding of the determinants of fire behavior by discussing inputs to the prediction process. Interpretations of the fire behavior outputs are taught to enhance participants' ability to understand why fire behaves as it does and to provide tools to help in fire management decisions.
