This course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize basic fire regimes, to understand the effects of fire treatments on flora and fauna, and to manipulate fire treatments to achieve desired fire effects. In addition, we examine the effects of fire management on health, safety, and public opinion. Multiple field trips are designed to instruct basic fire effects monitoring techniques, showcase fuels treatment alternatives and effects of recent wild and prescribed fires.

Target Group
Prescribed and wildfire personnel slated for burn boss, fire effects monitor, or other prescribed fire positions, fire ecologists and other natural resource managers involved in fire management, including interdisciplinary team resource advisors.
Prerequisites
S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior. Working knowledge of fire behavior. Understanding of basic ecological principles. Successfully complete all pre-work.
