2009 FIRE alliances summit

The partners in the Fire, Landscapes and People agreement convened a meeting in Arlington, Virginia to commemorate the successes of the nine-year collaboration and consider the changed context for their work in order to chart a new course for the agreement.

Key leaders from the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Interior and the Conservancy addressed the gathering and stressed the importance of continuing and strengthening the Partnership in order to meet increasing challenges related to managing fire and restoring ecosystems in a changing world.

Climate change -- its probable effects on wildfire frequency as well as the need to help ecosystems adapt to and withstand its impacts -- was a main topic of discussion, as was collaboration.

Some of the recommendations from the workshop will be incorporated into the Fire, Landscapes and People workplan over the next two years.  For example, existing training and education/outreach activities will be more closely aligned with the Fire Learning Network to develop a more holistic approach to solving ecosystem restoration issues, and staff at some Network landscapes will begin to explicitly account for climate change impacts in their planning. Conservancy and agency staff will continue to discuss how to best leverage their individual resources for increased impact.
